Series & Parallel Wiring

By the sheer number of e-mails I receive asking about series and parallel wiring, I know I have a topic that needs to be revisited. Here are several short questions along this theme from my crammed inbox. I've covered this topic a few times over the past 10 years of writing the Troubleshooting column for CA&E magazine, but I suspect we need to address this again for new enthusiasts. I'll keep the discussion close to the topic, knowing that I typically spend at least a day in class teaching the wide variety of options for speaker to amplifier configuration. I don't have the space here, so I'll make it very brief and hope you get the info you need. If not, there's always room in my class.

Q I'm a big fan of the mag. I recently bought three JL Audio 12-inch W3v3 4-ohm subwoofers. To power the subwoofers, I went with an Alpine MRD-M1005 V12 mono power amplifier. But the amp says it's 1,000 watts at 2 ohms. My question is what do I do because the subwoofers are single voice coil 4-ohm subwoofers? Is there any way I can get the subwoofers to work at 2 ohms? Also, if I wire the subwoofers in parallel and give the amp a 1.33-ohm load, does that mean the amp is going to fail soon? And will the subwoofers blow or decrease life expectancy if I run them any other ohm load than 1.33?Thank you for your time,Solomon Defrancis

I've a question about impedance that I was hoping you guys could help me with. I've four JL Audio 12W0 8-ohm subwoofers I'd like to install in my truck in a sealed box. What would be the best way to wire up the subs so that I get the lowest ohm load and all the juice from the amp? I don't see any point in having a 1-ohm stable amp if I run it at 8-ohm mono. I plan on purchasing a class D mono amplifier. Is that a good choice? Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.Regards,Rob Coolen

What's the difference between 2 ohms and 4 ohms of the dual voice coil? I'm talking about the Kicker Solo-Baric. I'm thinking about buying a pair of them, but I don't know which one I should pick: the 2-ohm or the 4- ohm? I'm going to run them with a Rockford Fosgate amp and install them in a Dodge Stratus and also in a PT Cruiser. I appreciate your advice, thanks.Sincerely I. Cardenas Ft. Bragg, NC

I have two 12-inch Rockford Fosgate DVC HX12's and was wondering if there's any possible way to wire these so they'd be running at a 2-ohm load. I mistakenly bought an amp before checking if I could wire the subs in at 2 ohms. Also, I was wondering if there's no way of running them at a 2-ohm load. Would it be safe running them in a 1-ohm load at 750 watts RMS with an MA Audio HC2501 if the gain is turned down?

I really appreciate the help, Andrew Jones

I've been building my own system and am looking to buy some new subs. I was wondering what the impedance of series-parallel wiring two DVC 2-ohm subs would be. I'd also like to know the impedance of wiring two DVC 4-ohm subwoofers. If you could give me the formula for calculating it, I'd greatly appreciate it.Thanks,Trace Tidwell

I've wanted to build a system in my car for a while now, but I want to build one that will last and has great performance. The question I have is dealing with ohms, and different subwoofers, connecting to amps in different ways. I want to find an amp that would easily power three JL Audio 12-inch W3's. What kind of amp would power any of the Dual 2-, 4-, or 6-ohm subwoofers. On the JL Audio website it shows connections for three 12 W3's in series and parallel creating different ohm loads. But it doesn't state which amp would power them.

Thanks for your help.Sincerely,Brian Varley
