Placing second in the '07 Pioneer PRS Demo Vehicle Build-Off, Christian Dalsgaard's '04 Subaru WRX STi melds high-performance driving with top-shelf listening. Built by Cartronics in Santa Rosa, CA, using Pioneer audio components exclusively, Dalsgaard's WRX features a 1,800-watt audio system that integrates seamlessly with its turbocharged, all-wheel-drive build.
Cartronics paid particular attention to the ambience of the environment-that is, they deadened the hell out of this notoriously noisy car with Dynamat Extreme. With three layers on the roof, two on the floor pan, firewall and trunk lid, no part of the car is covered with less than two layers. Keeping the trunk lid raised requires the use of gas struts. "It's definitely quieter than a Mercedes," Dalsgaard says.
It's just as quiet on the outside, or at least as quiet as a 300hp sport sedan can be. A JDM carbon-fiber front lip and rear diffusers add flair and a hint of aerodynamic advantage, while 5Zigen rims contribute to a clean and classic Japanese stance. Discouraging miscreant opportunists is a Clifford 770 G5 alarm system. "Cartronics built this car from the ground up," Dalsgaard adds. "All the hard work, blood, sweat and tears belongs to them and their incredible staff. I just get to enjoy it now."
