What do you get when you take your 2005 760Li BMW to Music In Motion in Chicago Heights, IL? Two words: pure heaven! That's what happened when OH2 Entertainment put their BMW into the hands of the M2 Team at Music In Motion. They had the job of making this car sound like a studio while still maintaining the vehicle's sleek and classy appearance. OH2 is in the music business, so the M2 Team had their hands full to impress their client and complete the install in four weeks.
Sounds From Dynaudio
The cockpit in this car is too nice to mess up so the M2 Team kept the factory navigation system and source unit intact. The crew began the transformation by removing the factory pocket in the front doors and making a custom enclosure from fiberglass and MDF to house the new Dynaudio MW 162 midbass drivers, which vent into the doors. After the enclosure was built, the whole door was wrapped in Italian leather with French stitching. To add flavor, "OH2 Entertainment" was also stitched into the leather. The MW 162s couldn't be complete without its sidekicks, the Dynaudio MW 142 dome midrange and MW 102 soft-dome tweeters, which were mounted in the factory location. The rear doors also got Dynaudio love with the System 222. As for the grilles, they were dyed to match the Italian leather interior. Stinger RoadKill was installed in both the front and rear doors. Since the team decided to keep the factory source unit, they had to install a JL Audio CleanSweep. From there, the signal is sent to an AudioControl DQS for the proper equalization, while Kimber cables were used for interconnects.
Take a Closer Look
One would think that there weren't any changes made to the trunk because of all the flawless Italian leather and French stitching. But with a closer look, you'll see something different. In addition to several panels, you'll find that the battery is located in the right rear of the trunk. The Stinger power wire runs to the two Earthquake PowerHouse 2.5-farad capacitors and on to the amplifiers. Remember, never judge a BMW by its Italian leather!
Checking Volts
OH2 wanted to keep a check on the voltage of the system so the M2 Team came up with the perfect idea. The Earthquake caps included attached digital volt meters so they took them apart and moved one of the meters to make it part of the installation.
Mac It Up
All of the speakers get their power from two McIntosh amplifiers. The MMC406M amp delivers 200 watts of pure power to the Dyn's. The MMC301M mono amp delivers 300 watts to two JL Audio 10w3v3's. The amprack was made of MDF and formica and in order to place it in the spare tire well, the tire had to be moved as well as the air pump for the vehicle's air-ride suspension.
Pump It Up
The air pump was relocated to the left side of the trunk, which was the location of the factory DVD changer. The team made steel brackets for the air pump to give stability. To help with vibration, they added rubber bushing to the brackets. The brackets for the DVD changer were rebuilt so that the changer could be placed on top of the air pump. Nine cooling fans were added in a push-pull configuration to provide ample airflow over the amps. As an added touch of flavor, a piece of 3/4" acrylic with a 24" BMW logo was placed on top of the amprack.
Feel The Bass
The sub enclosure is one that you rarely see these days, so the team developed a 3ft3 bandpass box. That's right - a bandpass box for this BMW! Knowing that the JL Audio 10w3v3's would work well in this type of enclosure, the team employed a pair of them. To give an optical illusion of more subs, a mirror was placed inside the box. The majority of the enclosure was made from 3/4" acrylic. Blue LEDs vented through the rear seat armrest lightly edge the enclosure. Also, the port area was covered with shiny black Formica to add depth to the back of the box when lit. The M2 Team and OH2 Entertainment were so impressed with the high bass output from the subs that a bass knob was added under the dash on the driver's side for better control.
The Total Package
This silver 2005 760Li BMW definitely has the total package - an impeccable sound and a sleek look! OH2 Entertainment and their clients will attest that the M2 Team of Music in Motion can definitely provide that studio sound for driving around the Windy City.
