The best day of July was at Waterfest, in Englishtown, N.J., July 21st! Shout to Maria Brown and the Eurotuner staff for their hospitality and professionalism in sponsoring the annual biggie of water-cooled shows. It was BIG!!! The weather was muy tropical and folks came from all corners of the North American continent to show out. Florida was representing, as was Canada, and of course the West Coast, the dons of the game. It's probably impossible to beat Waterfest right now; it's gunning big time and has all the heavies in the Euro-Clique coming together for this throw-down. European styling, performance, and tuners all in one spot, plus the usual debauchery - pretty fun I must say! ABD, the West Coast VW big dog of tuning, was mobbed, making it difficult to get much more than some grunts and a shout outta Jason Reich, but it's real good... Check out the outfit's Mini Cooper creativity at www.monstermini.com. Coming from Monster Mini to CA&E is the full-blown audio install of pristine order on September 23, so stay posted.
Thomas Okihisa, the marketing master at Toyo Tires, was in the Eurotuner tent with the company's models in full court press, as were adventurers Greg Yamamoto and Jason Dienhart, both of Super Street fame. Locals, Dave Miranda and Andy Kagan of Audio Designs of Fort Lee, N.J., had a picante Audi A4 on display; John Alisandrelli, Chief of Sales of the Sander Group/BBS Wheels, was hanging out and waxing nostalgic over the BBS Classic Wheel (which will be in our upcoming wheel history story). Once again, Englishtown (or E-town as we locals call it) is the best-organized spot to have a show of this magnitude. Don't ever forget it! Shout to Big Mike in charge at E-town! Also, as an aside, much love to Mama Shartsis, Eurotuner editor-in-chief Michael Shartsis' mother, who is recovering from an emergency operation! If you were wondering why he wasn't at Waterfest, that's why. We got your back, Mike!
Speaking of adventurers, Phoenix Gold president and CEO Keith Peterson and his team of adventure racers, Toby Evans, Joelle Ypma and Todd Olsen, ran the 2002 Subaru Primal Quest, a grueling expedition adventure race that spanned over 250 miles. The prize booty was a very respectable $250,000. Set in the heart of the spectacular Colorado Rockies, in and around Telluride, Colo., the Quest covered some of the toughest and most mountainous terrain in North America. Sixty-two four-person co-ed teams raced non-stop to a winning time of approximately three to five days (with a maximum of 10 days). Racers dealt with heavy-duty elevation changes while often competing at over 9,500 feet above sea level. Outdoor disciplines, including trail running, hiking, mountain biking, mountaineering, steep snow/ice travel, flat water paddling, downriver paddling, night and day navigation, ascending, rappelling and cross country travel meant that you had to be diesel and rugged like the Phoenix Gold product people we love so much!
